Our Favorite Molasses Cookies

vegan chewy ginger molasses cookies Pictures, Images and Photos

My mother was a most excellent baker. I remember my very favorite cookie as a kid was her molasses cut outs. I was never able to duplicate her recipe to make them quite as perfect as hers. Finally, I tried a recipe from an old church recipe book I purchased in the late 70's. It has now become a favorite with my family. The recipe is easy and one you can mix ahead and refrigerate. I hope you'll enjoy these cookies as much as we do! Psst...the original recipe didn't call for black strap and you can use whatever you have, but I think the secret to their true molasses goodness is in using dark, rich black strap molasses.

Molasses Cookies

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses - preferably black strap
1 egg
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt

Melt shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices. Add to first mixture. Mix well, then chill. Form into 1" balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes. (Check at 8 minutes as that is how long I usually bake these.)

Makes about 2 1/2 dozen.

  2. Hi city mouse! Thank you! The "old gate" photo was taken behind the barn. There's a fenced in area there we'd like to get cleaned up to possibly house a couple piggies in the future. I love the picture as well. Hey, I meant to say how much I liked your recent blog layout as well. Very nice.

YD - you are so very welcome! I love them, too! Thank you for taking time to say so! Nice to have you here!
